© saGar’s - My Expeditions...

Well, it has been so long since I posted something :)... Thinking of keeping it live through the most easiest way for me - by making it as a Photo-Blog [Just Thinking :)]. Again it won't be the tips and tricks to take decent photos, as I am yet to find out those. My thoughts are to point out the negatives in the pictures taken by me till now, like "What-not-to-be-repeated" sorts along with some story behind the picture if possible...(Thanks to the part of the title of Chetan Bhagat's first book - 'What not to do at IIT')

2008 - The Beginning
The year in which I upgraded from my Mobile Cam to Cybershot DSC W150, my first digicam...The year in which I "thought" I have some real talents in photography after seeing my cliché out of focus flower/ insect shots...The year in which I started exploring and overdoing post processing...The year in which I started using my pictures as my Wallpaper…

2009 – The Experimentation Time
The year in which I took the pain to read the camera manual and started exploring my Cybershot...The year in which I started realizing that most of my 'post processing effects' can actually be achieved from camera itself...The year in which I got so many of 'My First' snaps like Blurred Background, Black Background, Butterflies etc...The year in which I used to search and analyze snaps taken by professionals...And most importantly the year in which I realized that 'some' of my then Best Snaps are actually thrash-able....

2010 – The Learning Curve Starts
The year in which I decided to upgrade my camera but was skeptical about SLRs as I don't even know the basics of basics in photography...The year in which I came to know about prosumer cameras and bought my Lumix FZ 35...The year in which I got the opportunity to understand the basics of photography (Thanks to Infy Photography Gurus)...The year in which I started clicking after deciding the parameters rather than just trial and error...The year in which I started going out just to shoot (Even in early mornings!!)...The year in which I started to restrict my post processing to the basics...The year in which I shift deleted 'most' of my then favorites...The year in which I stopped using the snaps taken by me as the wallpaper as I always found many other excellent wallpaper pics from my Gurus...And the year in which I started convincing Praveena (and myself) to buy SLR next year...

Expert tips to crack Class X exams!!

No…I am not an expert in giving tips even for a KG student.. Jess pinged me a link and asked me to check, which he does quite often when there is no work and as I was also jobless, I clicked the link - Live Chat: Expert tips to crack Class X examsA link from rediff home page!!

I first logged on to internet when I was 18 or so by paying Rs.70/ hour; not for getting any tips to crack my Engineering Entrance, but for the obvious reason which some might have guessed…. Nope, it’s just for checking my Pre-Degree result; yes I did mention “I first logged on...” -:). During engineering days internet for me was mainly for chatting only, till last semester. During last semester I was forced to Google project/ seminar topics and it was during that time I realized that the most useful keys in the keyboard are Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. These are the three keys which will get faded in any students’ machine. I must admit that internet helped me in taking a decision to go for MBA rather than searching for jobs; it enlighten me that getting a decent job without final mark list is almost impossible, but joining some decent MBA institutes after cracking CAT is possible, provided I should be able submit the mark list with in 5-6 months after joining. But again rediff didn’t have any live chats for tips to clear backlog papers :-(. I don’t even remember seeing anything similar for cracking CAT or for overcoming MBA torture. The only similar things which I remember seeing were how to crack GD/ interview. Things have changed drastically in about 5-10 years. Internet became a vital part in almost everyone’s life right from the very young age. Younger generation using it for completing their assignments (Yes, Assignment is the new nomenclature for Home Work even in primary schools), our generation using it for diverse needs – chatting, social networking, tweeting, blogging, shopping, banking, trading, ticket booking, job searching and the list goes on and the older ones for ‘Skyping’ their off springs who are studying/ working abroad. Think how much you got frustrated when broadband was not working. Was the frustration level same when the TV/ Refrigerator/ Microwave/ DVD player etc stopped working? Are we getting addicted to internet? Well, I don’t know, may be….

Still…to crack class X, do these people really need these many tips? The participation level in this chat shows they need these tips!! ‘Live Chat: Expert tips to get KG admission’, may not be so far…

PS: Just now I received two friend invites in Facebook; one from my 12 year ‘old’ cousin and the next one from my 58 year ‘young’ father.

Delhi “Bytes” – The Mallu Restaurant!!!

Delhi Bytes - a small 20 seater restaurant near Infy Gate which used to serve North Indian and Chinese dishes for lunch and dinner. Initially I thought “Bytes” is a spelling mistake, but later some one told that it may be some one’s creativity to spell “Bites” as “Bytes” as it is situated in the IT capital. Recently they sold the restaurant and a young Mallu Business Magnet from Thalassery bought that restaurant including the ‘Brand name’, cooking utensils, furniture and even the Menu Card!!

He started operation last week and not surprisingly the news is spread among Infy mallus, that a Kerala Restaurant is opened near by and they are serving Fish Curry rice, that too Boiled Rice in Plantain leaf!! Red Boiled rice is inevitable in Kerala Restaurants outside Kerala. Even I will be disappointed if red boiled rice is not available in any of the Kerala restaurants here in Bangalore; but in my home I don’t mind having any rice. Along with Jess, I also went to this restaurant for a good Kerala Lunch. As the name was still Delhi Bytes, before entering we reconfirmed to make sure that we will be served with Boiled Rice and Fish Curry; and this became our topic of discussion – Why they are not changing the Restaurant name from Delhi Bytes to at least Kerala Bytes? It was just a discussion, not a debate as both of us felt that the name should be changed. While waiting for the food to be served, we noticed that 14 out of 20 seats were already occupied by mallus and all were having Fish Curry Rice with “Aiyla/ Kilimeen” Fry. Only one table was free and waiting for another 4 mallus. But to our surprise, 2 good looking northie kudiyas (Yes, IT girls will be good looking on FridaysJ) entered “Delhi Bytes”. Our young Mallu Business Magnet (MBM) jumped in front and welcomed them by pointing the empty chairs.

MBM: Welcome Madams. Please seat (Both of them occupied the seats and started giggling for madams and seat). In the mean time MBM went inside to search for the Menu Card which he ‘bought’ from the old owner and gave it to both the girls and waited eagerly for taking the order.

Girl1: Do you have Tandoori Chicken?

MBM: (Confused) Tandoori…..No.

Girl2: Ok. Chicken Hariyali?

MBM: (Again confused) Hmmmmm…..That chicken…Yes. And? (From his face it was clear that he is hearing Hariyali Chicken for first time in his life, but has confidence that his cook can convert normal chicken masala to anything, may be by adding some sauce)

Girl1: And two Butter Kulcha

MBM: No kulcha…But Butter Chapathi.....Give you Butter Chapathi (He should have at least told Butter Roti, I felt)

Girl2: Butter Chapathi??

MBM: Butter Chapathi..good...like kulcha…same...How many?

Girl2: Is it big? What is the size of Butter Chapathi?

MBM: (After thinking for about 30 seconds) Medium....Medium Size…Not small....Take 4.

Girl1: Ok take (From her face it was clear that she had lost all the hope in having a good northie lunch)

In the mean time we finished our Fish Curry Rice and came out to pay the bill. We noticed that the cook was preparing the famous Butter Chapathi by applying some butter/ oil in the already prepared Chapathi and heating it!! God only knows how he will make the Chicken Hariyali from Chicken Masala!!!

Why are they not changing the Restaurant name from Delhi Bytes? We got the answer by that time. Immaterial of whether the name is Delhi Byes or Punjabi Dhaba or anything, if they serve Fish Curry Rice, mallus will come to know some how and will definitely go there; call it Word of Mouth publicity or any jargon. But if the restaurant name is Kerala Bytes, he can expect only mallus, not any northies. If he is keeping the same name then he will get some northies along with guaranteed mallu crowd; provided he will appoint a multi lingual server and a multi talented cook.

While walking back we noticed all the tables were again occupied by mallus and two poor northies were waiting to be seated in the hope of having some North Indian Dish…

PS: The Fish Curry meals with Fish Fry was amazing and was reasonably priced. All Infy mallus should try it. (Word of mouth publicity :P)

Malayalam Movies ’09 – A Comprehensive Review

Jess pinged me yesterday and told, “Till now I had just written something which was only read by me. Today I am going to write something about Malayalam Film Industry for the public - My First Public Blog”. But I cannot say the same, as this is something I am scribbling for the first time and yes, I am taking the risk of making it public!!! Also this is inspired by Jess’ topic. So here it goes:

Malayalam Movies ’09 – A Comprehensive Review

Disclaimer: This will make sense only to mallus who used to follow Malayalam movies. This is absolutely my personal opinion, not based on box office collections and stuffs like that…

Tribute to the legends Rajan P Dev, Murali, Lohitadas and Adoor Bhavani...

As everyone says, year 2009 was a fantastic year for Malayalam film industry with lots of experiments and excellent movies. But did anyone expect 2009 will turn out to be like this during the first half?

For me 2009 started with “Love in Singapore”, “Red Chillies” followed by “Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded”. Without even writing a single word about these movies, hope everyone will understand the mindset of a movie buff who had some minimum level of expectation from the famous Director-Star combos in the above ones. One will seriously think twice before booking ticket for a mal movie after seeing three back to back disappointments; or rather disasters. Thanks to the after effect, I became somewhat choosy and avoided “Colors”, “IG”, “Moss & Cat” and the likes.

The first relief in 2009 was “Makante Achan”, which was simple and humorous spiced with good show by Sreenivasan and Vineeth Sreenivasan. Then it was much awaited “2 Harihar Nagar” and after a long time felt pain in stomach by laughing. Felt so good to hear the old songs again in this sequel. Mukesh, Siddique, Asokan and Jagadeesh did total justice to their roles. Missed “Banaras” and “Bhagyadevatha” in between for the reasons which I cannot recollect. The “experimental” movie (shot in 24 hours!) which I wanted to see, but the theatres didn’t allowed me to was “Bhagavan”; thanks to the real Bhagavan for this. “Passenger” from debutant Renjith Sanker was a nice watch. A fresh theme, supported by good performance from Sreenivasan. Finally after 3 flops Mohanlal showed his real flair in Blessi’s “Bhramaram”. Though it was a usual Blessi approach, Mohanlal steal the show with mind-blowing performance. Mammootty’s second film of the year “Ee Pattanathil Bootam” seems to be liked by the child audience; but needs to be confirmed from child audience itself as it was again a disappointment for me. As per the news articles Diphan’s “Putiya Mukham” gave a new superhero to the Malayalam industry, it seems!! It was a movie full of action and only action, nothing else. Waited eagerly for K. Madhu – S.N. Sami combo’s “Rahasya Police”, but again it was another disaster of the year. Shyama Prasad’s “Ritu” gave a fresh feel and did justice in portraying the life of today’s IT youth. Mammootty’s “Daddy Cool” was liked by the one’s who want to see the glamorous Mammootty. The film showcased Mammootty in the most fashionable outfits and was liked by hardcore fans. Anyway need to appreciate the hard work put by the star to take care of his “young look” or better to say “not so old look” even in his late 50’s. The next one from Mammootty was Jayaraj’s “Loudspeaker”. Mammootty’s character as Mike, who was a simple, down to earth, uneducated common man from a remote village got recognized. The remake of old hit “Alliyambal” gave nostalgic feelings in audience mind. Everyone did justice to their job and the film was so touching. Missed seeing “Vairam”, where Pasupathy played an awesome role it seems and Adoor’s “Oru Pennum Randu Aanum”. Till this stage it was like any normal year for Malayalam film industry with lots of hypes followed by almost equal number of flops and few remarkable ones like 2 Harihar Nagar, Bhramaram, Loudspeaker and Ritu.

Yes, it’s the last quarter that made 2009 the real star. The much awaited MT-Hariharan-Mammootty’s “Pazhassiraja” was released in October. Meeting, or rather exceeding everyone’s expectation it is becoming an all time hit for Malayalam industry. Measure it using any parameters; be it acting, be it direction, be it cinematography, be it sound recording, be it marketing, simply be it anything which is needed for a successful movie; this indeed is a real good movie in all the aspects. Special mention needed for Sarath Kumar, Manoj K Jayan and Padmapriya. Should appreciate Gokulam Gopalan’s mettle for taking this whopping 27 crore project in a small state like Kerala. Also it proves that if the film is really good, budget doesn’t matter.

One of the most successful Writer/ Director/ Producer/ Actor in the industry Ranjith came with two back to back critically acclaimed experimental projects – “Kerala Café” and “Paleri Maanikyam – Oru Paatira Kolapaathakathinte Kadha”. “Kerala Café” was a collection of ten different short films directed by ten directors based on the common theme “Journey” under the main architect Ranjith. Among these 10 journeys, “Bridge” from Anwar Rasheed was the most touching one. It was a pleasant surprise to see the director, who had done comedy hits “Rajamanikyam”, “Chotta Mumbai” and “Annan Thambi” did such a heart touching story and conveyed a strong message. Witnessed another serious role which will bring tears in your eyes from Salim Kumar after “Achanurangaatha Veedu”; yes he can do much more than comedy and people should exploit his talents. Lal Jose’s “Puramkaazhchakal” scored the second place due to the unexpected and heart-breaking climax and also due to the impact given by Mammootty and Sreenivasan. Anjali Menon shined with the theme and humorous presentation of “Happy Journey”, supported by Jagathy’s brilliant performance. Revathy’s “Makal” and debutant Shankar Ramakrishnan’s “Island Express” scored above the remaining. “Lalitham Hiranmayam” was a surprise from Shaji Kailas, who is known only for his action thrillers. Unnikrishnan’s “Aviramam” and Shyama Prasad’s “Off Season” was some what based on the common theme of recession; Unnikrishnan took a serious path, where as for a change Shyama Prasad took a lighter comedy path. Uday Ananthan’s “Mrityunjayam” was a horror flick and Padmakumar’s “Nostalgia” was a story of a selfish NRI.

“Paleri Maanikyam” was an adaptation of T.P. Rajeevan’s novel which talks about the first registered rape murder in Kerala. As per sify.com review, “It is such a film, which is exceptionally brilliant, intelligently executed and thrilling to the core”. I think this explains it all. Mammootty came in three different roles and I think this is the only film which utilized his acting skills to the core in recent past. Apart from Mammootty, Sreenivasan, Siddique and Swetha Menon, all other actors came from theatre background and acted after a ten day workshop conducted for this movie. Ranjith definitely gave some real good talents to the industry. The film will haunt you even after leaving the theatre. Due to bad marketing and untimely release it is not making much impact in the screens.

“Swantham Lekhakan” tried to do a good theme, but the second half is too slow and audience will loose patience. Yet to see Lal Jose’s “Neelathamara”, so cannot comment anything on that. Roshan’s “Ividam Swargamanu” is doing well in the theatre, but some how personally I didn’t felt it so exciting. Seems to be dragging, too filmy or something. May be because of the higher expectation from Roshan Andrews after “Udayananu Tharam” and “Notebook”. “Chattambi Naadu” from Shafi is also making waves in the box office. Personally it is just a movie which can be seen with out getting bored.

The interesting fact is 2009 was dominated by the Big M’s; not by any young bloods. “Bhramaram” gave Mohanlal a good stage to showcase his talents. Mammootty was blessed to get different kinds of roles that portrayed his different faces to the audience through Loud Speaker, Paleri Maanikyam, Pazhassiraja and Kerala Café. Overall, as I said earlier it’s the last quarter which really made 2009 the real star of Malayalam Film industry.

So here I am finishing my first blog; who knows might be last also. At least I hope some good movies will be released in 2010 also, so that I may write again next year.

Signing off…………
